Job Fit - Hire Well, or Be Prepared to Hire Often

Turnover Isn’t Just a Revolving Door – It’s Costing Your Business More Than You Think

Turnover is more than just watching employees come and go; it’s a direct drain on profits, resources, productivity, quality, employee morale, and even your company’s reputation. Yet, many executives and business owners have come to accept high turnover as the “cost of doing business.” They blame it on the industry or the nature of the job, assuming it’s simply turnover-prone.

This mindset of “just hire someone, even if they don’t stay” is not only flawed—it’s expensive. In fact, this approach is often the very reason turnover remains an ongoing challenge, which brings us to the title of this post: Be Prepared to Hire Often.

Having spent most of my career in labor-intensive industries, high-volume manufacturing plants, and distribution centers, I can tell you from experience that the costs of turnover compound quickly. If I had known then what I know now, I would have approached hiring very differently. There are people who prefer working in structured environments—who thrive as part of a team, follow rules, and enjoy routine tasks with clear policies and procedures.

But here’s the challenge: these individuals aren’t easy to spot from a resume, an application, or even a standard interview unless you’re asking the right questions and looking for specific indicators. Even then, hiring can feel subjective.

The good news? There’s a way to identify these qualities right from the start—at the resume submission or application stage. It’s legal, scalable, accurate, and eliminates bias. Not only will this help reduce turnover, but it also enables you to structure interviews around the three key candidate attributes (and yes, job skills is one of them).

Jim Collins, the New York Times best-selling author of Good to Great, nailed it when he emphasized the importance of having “the right people in the right seat.” This approach is a departure from traditional hiring practices that focus exclusively on skills, education, or job requirements.
